The Three Lanes of AI: Ignore, Fear, or Leverage It

There is a 100% chance AI is affecting your work right now, and people fall into three lanes. Ignore it, fear it, or ask how to leverage it and grow inside the structure that replaced the old one. Only the third lane goes anywhere.

30+ YEARS DIGITAL STRATEGY

There is no fourth lane

There is a 100% chance AI is affecting your work right now. Whether you have opened it or not.

From there, people sort into three lanes.

Lane one: ignore it

The bet here is that this passes, or that it lands somewhere else. It is a quiet bet and it feels safe because nothing is happening yet.

The cost is invisible until it is not.

Lane two: fear it

This lane knows something is coming and treats it as weather. Nothing to do but brace.

Fear and ignorance produce the same behavior. Neither one moves.

Lane three: leverage it

The question in this lane is different. How do I use this. How do I protect my position. How do I grow inside the new structure rather than mourn the old one.

Same uncertainty as lane two. Different response to it.

Why the lane matters more than the tool

This clip was recorded on 20 May 2026, the day Meta announced 8,000 job cuts in an AI restructuring.

Eight thousand people at one of the most sophisticated technology companies on earth. If you work somewhere that size and did not see it coming, that is worth sitting with. The information was available. The lane determined whether anyone acted on it.

How to change lanes

1. Say which lane you are in

Out loud, honestly. Most people in lane one describe themselves as being in lane three.

2. Name one thing at risk

Not the whole job. One task, one skill, one part of how you deliver value.

3. Learn the thing that touches it

Not AI in general. The specific capability that touches the specific thing.

4. Build something small with it

Reading is lane two behavior. Building is lane three.

What this does not mean

It does not mean the third lane is safe. It means it is the only one where your effort changes the outcome.

It also does not mean everyone in lane one is careless. Some people are busy running a business that works. The trouble is that the lane feels identical from the inside right up until it does not.

The decision

Pick the lane deliberately instead of drifting into one. Then name the single task you would protect first.

Cameo by Jack Fargo. There's a 100% chance that AI is affecting your life right now. But I put people into three different lanes. There's the ones that ignore it. There's the ones that are terrified of it. I mean, Meta fired 8,000 people today. 8,000 people from Meta. How could you be working at Meta and not know that your job is in jeopardy? What? And then there's the people that are saying, how can I leverage AI? What can I do to protect my job, or more importantly grow within the new ecosystem and the new deck of cards we've been dealt? I wonder which one of those you fall into. Go forth.

Know which lane you are in.
