The prize moved
For twenty years, ranking on Google was the prize. Get to page one, get the click, get the customer.
That chain has a broken link now. Roughly two out of every three Google searches end without anyone clicking anything.
What zero-click actually means for you
The searcher still got their answer. They read it on the results page, or from an AI summary, and moved on.
Your ranking may be intact. Your traffic is not. Those are now two different things, and most businesses are still measuring the first one.
The one-minute test
Open ChatGPT. Open Claude. Open whatever your audience actually uses.
Put in a query about what your business does. Not your company name. The problem a customer would describe.
See whether you show up. Then check whether your competitors do.
They will. That is the problem.
Why your name is the wrong test
Searching your own business name almost always returns something. That feels reassuring and it measures nothing.
Nobody who does not already know you types your name. The queries that matter are the ones where the customer describes the problem and the AI picks who to name.
What to do with the result
1. Write down the exact queries you lost
The specific wording. That is your target list.
2. Look at who did get named
Then look at why. Usually it is not that they are better. It is that they are easier to connect to that specific problem.
3. Check what the AI cited
Sources are the lever. Your own site is a small share of what these systems reference.
4. Fix one query, not all of them
Pick the one closest to what you actually sell.
What this does not mean
It does not mean SEO is worthless. Much of what makes a page findable by AI is the same work that made it findable by search.
It means ranking is no longer the finish line. It is one input into a different answer.
The decision
Run the test today. One query, the way a customer would say it. Then decide whether you are comfortable with what came back.

Two out of every three people searching Google don't even click through anymore. What's that mean? That means that SEO isn't as big as it used to be. For 20 years, getting ranked on Google was the prize. The prize has changed. If you are not being found on AI search, you're not relevant. Go on ChatGPT, go on Claude, go on whatever you think your audience is searching for you on, put in a query about what your business is. See if you show up. See if your competitors show up. They're gonna. If you're not showing up, that's the problem. I'm Jeff Fargo. I get my clients ranked above their competitors on AI search. It's simple: AI visibility, and hours of your week back. Go forth.
Jeff Fargo is the founder of Fargo Factor and host of Fargo Talks. Fargo Factor advises established businesses on AI Search Authority, AI Decision Systems, and selective AI-enabled implementation.
WHEN THE DECISION MATTERS
