The gap
The gap between who sees you and who should see you is about to get a lot smaller.
That is the opening of this Fargo Walks clip, recorded in April 2026, and it is good news for the businesses that move first.
Where your customer is
Your customer is not on Google. They are on Claude and ChatGPT.
That is my argument, and it is deliberately blunt. Plenty of people still search Google. The point is that a growing share of the questions that used to start there now start in an AI chat, and the answer they get back is a short list of names. Either yours is on it or it is not.
What I keep finding
In April I was putting company names into AI systems and checking whether the business existed there. Most businesses did not exist there at all. The invisibility is shocking. That is the gap.
Not a bad ranking. Not a weak description. Nothing.
Run the check yourself
1. Ask the category question
Open ChatGPT and Claude. Ask the question a customer would ask: who should I hire for this, in this city, for this problem. Write down every name that comes back.
2. Ask about you by name
What is your company, what do you do, who do you serve. Read what comes back word for word.
3. Score it
Absent. Present but wrong. Present and thin. Present and accurate. Most businesses land in the first two.
4. Note who showed up instead
That is your competitor set as AI sees it, whether or not it matches yours.
5. Repeat monthly
Same questions, same platforms, dated. You are measuring movement, not taking one screenshot.
New evidence: the scale of the gap
In September I ran this same test again, this time through Google's AI Mode instead of ChatGPT and Claude. Same result: ask who's the best at what you do in your city, and either you show up or you don't.
Google confirmed AI Mode alone has surpassed 1 billion monthly active users (Sundar Pichai, Alphabet Q2 2026 earnings remarks). That is not a future problem. That is the current size of the audience deciding who gets called before your website is ever touched.
What closes the gap
Existing in AI answers is not luck. It is evidence AI can find, read, and connect to your name: a consistent business record, one clear answer to the problem you own, and third-party proof that it is real. I lay out that method in Why AI Recommends Your Competitor When You Know More.
What this does not mean
It does not mean abandon Google. It means the second door is open, most of your competitors are not standing in it yet, and the check takes ten minutes.
The decision
Put your company name into Claude and ChatGPT today. If you do not exist there, that is the gap, and it is fixable.
