Google's AI Review Summary Is Your First Impression Now

Google generates an AI summary from your reviews and places it above everything else on your listing. BrightLocal found 82% of consumers read it. That summary is your first impression, you did not write it, and most owners have never read their own.

Someone else writes your first impression

AI is reading your reviews before your customers do.

Google pulls from them and writes a summary that sits at the top of your listing. BrightLocal's 2026 survey found 82% of consumers read it.

That is the first impression now. You did not write it and most owners have never read their own.

What the number actually says

Of the consumers surveyed, 23% rely on the summary alone to make a decision. Another 39% read it alongside individual reviews. Only 18% skip it entirely.

So for roughly one in four people, the summary is the whole story. They are not reading your reviews. They are reading Google's account of your reviews.

Go look at yours

Search your own business on Google right now and read what the summary says.

Most owners find one of two things. Either a summary that emphasizes something they would not have led with, or no summary at all.

What it means when there is no summary

My read from what I see in the field is that an absent summary usually means the reviews are too old or too thin for Google to work with. There is not enough recent material to generate anything from.

That is a worse position than an imperfect summary. An imperfect summary is a first impression you can influence. No summary is an empty space where your competitors have one.

How to influence it

1. Read yours first

You cannot fix what you have not looked at. Do this before anything else.

2. Note what it emphasizes

The summary reflects what reviewers actually wrote about. If it emphasizes the wrong thing, your reviews are emphasizing the wrong thing.

3. Get recent reviews, not more reviews

Recency appears to matter more than volume for whether a summary generates at all.

4. Ask customers about the specific thing

Not "leave us a review." Ask about the part of the work you want the summary to mention.

5. Check again in sixty days

The summary regenerates. This is a dial you can move, slowly.

What this does not mean

It does not mean you can write your own summary. You cannot, and any service claiming otherwise is selling you something that does not exist.

It also does not mean review count is the goal. The summary is built from what people said, not how many said it.

The decision

Look up your own business on Google today and read the summary. One minute. Then decide whether that is the introduction you want.
