Nine times, and the reason matters
The customer who finds you through ChatGPT is roughly nine times more likely to buy.
Seer Interactive measured ChatGPT referrals converting at 15.9%. Google organic on the same site converted at 1.76%.
Why the gap is that wide
Someone who reaches your site from an AI answer has already had the comparison done for them.
The AI narrowed the field, weighed the options, and handed them a short list. By the time they click, they are at the end of the decision, not the start of it.
Google traffic arrives earlier. More of it, further from the buy, doing work the AI has already finished for the other visitor.
Read this honestly
This is one client's data and it deserves the caveats.
AI sent under a tenth of one percent of that site's traffic. Just under 11,000 sessions against almost 14 million from Google organic. Seer themselves point out those visitors were already high intent, so this is not a clean like-for-like comparison between channels.
Treat it as directional. The direction is what matters.
What it changes about your problem
If small numbers of AI-referred visitors convert at rates ordinary search traffic does not touch, then your problem is not traffic volume.
Your problem is not being one of the names the AI hands over.
That is a different job than SEO. It is about being connectable to a specific problem in the sources these systems read.
What to do about it
1. Find out whether you get named
Ask the AI what a customer would ask. See if you appear.
2. Separate AI referrals in your analytics
If you cannot see the channel, you cannot see the effect.
3. Judge it by conversion, not sessions
The volume will look trivial. That is expected and it is not the point.
4. Fix the sources, not the site
Being named is a function of what independent sources say about you.
What this does not mean
It does not mean AI traffic will replace search traffic. At these volumes it cannot, and it may never.
It also does not mean a 9X multiple applies to your business. One client, one period, one category. The mechanism is what transfers, not the number.
The decision
Stop measuring whether AI sends you traffic. Start measuring whether AI names you at all.
