How do I stop AI from telling me what I want to hear?
End your request with one line: "Ask me any questions that you may have regarding more context." That gives AI permission to dig in and ask before it answers, instead of handing you something built to please you.
Why does AI hand you an answer built to please you?
Because it fills the gaps in your request with a guess, and the guess leans toward what sounds good. The answer reads fine and misses what you needed.
What is the difference between a guess and a question?
A guess is an answer built from what AI assumes you meant. A question is AI checking what you meant before it answers.
What do I add to my request?
At the end, write: Ask me any questions that you may have regarding more context. Then answer what it asks. The extra context is what changes the answer.
Does this work in ChatGPT and other AI?
Use the same line in ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity or any other AI you ask for work. It is a request, not a setting, so it travels with you.
What this does not mean
It does not mean AI will always ask, and it does not guarantee a better answer every time. It gives AI permission to dig in. You still read what comes back, and you decide whether it holds up.
The decision
On your next request, add the line at the end. Answer the questions it asks you. Then judge the answer against what you needed, not what sounded good.

Here's a great way to get what you want out of AI during a conversation. At the end of your prompt, say, "Ask me any questions that you have regarding more context. Ask me any questions that you may have regarding more context." Listen to that one. It then will give AI the permission to dive in more and not just give you back something that's gonna please you.
