You Caved on Price. Role Play It With ChatGPT

When a client pushes back on price, don't cave. Rehearse it first: give ChatGPT voice the deal context and have it push back hard until the objections feel boring.

You sent the proposal. The client pushed back on price, or went quiet. The silence got awkward, so you threw in a discount to get things moving again. I get it. Here's how I'd use ChatGPT to practice that moment before it happens again, so you hold your number instead of caving.

How do I stop discounting when a client pushes back on price?

Practice the pushback before you face it. Open ChatGPT, turn on voice, give it the full context of the deal and have it play the client. Tell it to push back and be hard on you. Keep going until the objections stop rattling you and start to feel boring.

Role playing price pushback means rehearsing the hard part of a deal out loud with an AI playing the other side, so your first time hearing the objection isn't in front of the real client.

Why does caving on price cost you?

The discount usually doesn't come from the client. It comes from you, filling an awkward silence. The client pushes back or stops replying, the quiet feels uncomfortable, and you lower the price hoping it gets the deal moving. That's a decision made under pressure, not a decision about what the work is worth.

Practice changes the pressure. If you've already heard the objection a dozen times in rehearsal, the real one is familiar. You can answer it calmly instead of reaching for a discount.

What should I give ChatGPT before the role play?

Give it the context around the entire transaction. The more it knows, the more realistic the client it plays. Useful context includes:

  • What you proposed and the price you quoted.
  • Who the client is and how the conversation has gone so far.
  • What they've pushed back on, or where they went quiet.
  • What you're willing to change and what you're not.

Use only information you're comfortable putting into your AI workspace. A role label like "a homeowner" or "a small law firm" is often enough. Leave out names and private details the practice doesn't need.

How do I set up the role play in ChatGPT?

Open ChatGPT and switch to voice so you're talking, the way you would on a real call. Then tell it plainly what you want. Something like: "Play this client. Push back on my price. Be difficult. Be really hard on me." Answer out loud. When the round ends, run it again.

Voice matters here. Typing gives you time to polish every answer. Talking out loud is closer to the real conversation, where you have to respond in the moment.

How do I know I've practiced enough?

Keep doing it until the pushbacks become boring. That's the signal. When an objection that used to make your stomach drop feels routine, you're ready to hear it from the real client. As I say in the clip, confidence is not a personality. It's reps.

What does this not solve?

Role play builds your comfort with the conversation. It doesn't decide your price for you, and it can't make a client say yes. ChatGPT is playing a version of the client based on what you told it, so the real person may push back in ways the practice didn't cover. You still decide what you'll hold firm on and what you'll change.

What should you do today?

Pick the deal where you're most tempted to discount. Open ChatGPT voice, give it the context and have it push back on you until the objections feel boring. If you're in Las Vegas, Henderson or Summerlin and want help building AI into how you prepare for client conversations, talk with me.

You caved on price to close the deal. I get it. You submit your proposal, they push back, or they ghost you. The silence gets awkward, so you throw in a discount to hopefully get things moving.

Instead, go into ChatGPT, open up voice, give it context around the entire transaction, and then role play with it. Tell it, push back, be a pain in my ass, be really hard on me. Keep doing that until the push backs become boring.

Confidence is not a personality. It's reps.
